Wiser Than Solomon

The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. Luke 11:31

When we think of or say: Judge not and you won’t be judged, love your neighbor as yourself, let those without sin cast the first stone, blessed are the poor, blessed are the meek, don’t build your house on sand, Oh ye of little faith, and many other sayings, we are echoing the words of Jesus.

We take the wisdom of Jesus for granted because even non-Christians have grown up generation after generation with the backdrop of Christian ethics that are built into the foundation of democracies. When we say give to caesar what belongs to caesar we are repeating the words of Jesus.

Today people tend to forget that things like prison reform, hospitals, charities, building of schools and higher forms of learning primarily came from Christianity and were inspired by the Founder of Christianity--Jesus. All these things we take for granted are rooted in the wisdom of our Lord.

It is hard to imagine a world without Judeo-Christian ethics, but we see places in the world where the gospel is suppressed. These are not places conducive to freedom or much else that is good. Indeed, this is a reason people flee such countries and instead choose countries with a foundation of freedom based on Christian ethics.

Something particular to the Christian believer is that we can each tap into the wisdom of Jesus not only through reading and studying His words in the Bible, but also through the Holy Spirit Jesus has given to the believer.

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him. 1 John 2:27

Much misery in this world and in our own lives could be avoided if we simply adhered to the words and teachings found in the Bible. And if you are a Christian you have ready access to that wisdom simply by asking.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5

Don’t neglect the wisdom that comes from Jesus. I have never regretted following His teachings, but I have much regret for every time I neglected them. We can all be wiser and better people, and it begins with the wisdom of Jesus and our practice and understanding of His teachings.

Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive us of the times we have ignored Your wise words and teachings. Help us to recall and practice the wisdom You give to us. Thank You for being both our Lord and Teacher. Amen.
