And
we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love
him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
Metaphysics is usually defined as the philosophical study of knowing
and being. Philosophers have debated the deep questions of life for
centuries. Yet the greatest questions involve knowing: Why are we here?
Who created the world? Who created us? To know essentially: Why do we
exist?
It is fundamental to know who we are, why we are here, and what our
purpose in life might be. Without the Bible and without God there is
left a vacuum that false religions, cults, and shysters of all types
have tried to take advantage of for centuries.
We are built with an innate need for relevance. While the world spins
around us we desire to know what it all means. And when afflictions,
disease, and hardships of all kinds come against us we can sometimes
wonder if there is any meaning to life at all.
Christians find meaning in the Person of Jesus Christ. He too lived on
this difficult earth with its pain, sorrows, and multiple miseries. Yet
He lived with purpose and meaning. Jesus lived for others. He sacrificed
His precious time, energy, and resources on behalf of others. He cared
for the sick, fed the hungry, and wept along with those who mourned. Of course He did much more than this, He died on the cross for a sin sick world.
Day to day our life can seem meaningless. Especially for those of us
who are continuously fighting one battle after another. Yet like Jesus,
we can know there is meaning to our life because we are doing the will
of God by carrying on in faith. Taking one step after another, rolling
the wheelchair forward, or simply looking up to God from our bed of
sickness--being faithful in the place God has put us is no small thing.
To be faithful in affliction gives meaning to our difficult lives.
Living in a world with a loving Savior reveals to the world that we live
with a purpose, to serve the One who made us and called us to become
His children. We are not alone. There is a Lord who made us and who
loves us and lives within us. That is enough reason and meaning for
anyone.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, our life sometimes feels meaningless, yet You give us a
purpose. Help us never to despair, but to always hope as we remember You
came to this world to save us and give meaning to our existence. Amen.
Karlton - thank you for this posting.
ReplyDeleteI really needed its message today as my body is lagging.
The meditation message I read before your devotional came to my 'inbox' was the post Resurrection account of Thomas. It is not that I am doubting my risen Savior, and I can't be sure Thomas did either but his grief gave him a jolt wanting to 'see to believe'.
To believe without seeing, to go through our days praying we are accepting the plans God has for us when our eyes cannot see clearly is something He said is 'better than believing when we can see'. In fact we are 'blessed' because we do.
Amen.
Continuing prayers for you.
God bless.
Lynn
Thanks Lynn!
ReplyDeleteWell said. When we are at our worst we do wish we could see a bit more clearly, rather than having to completely rely on faith. But perhaps these hard times make us stronger by believing when it is more difficult.
Praying you feel better.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Blessings.
