So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6 (NIV)
I
was about 8 years old when my Sunday School teacher gave me my first
Bible. It was astounding to me that I was carrying in my hands the very
words of God. It left an impression that remains to this day.
The word of God formed everything that exists. He made the earth, planets, galaxies, you
and me. Everything exists because of God. We cannot imagine how
powerful He is, and that power exists in His word found in the Bible.
More
times than I can count over the years a verse from the Bible has
comforted, guided, reassured, and empowered me to live as a child of
God. Today people mock the very idea of God, and consider the Bible a
useless book written by men. But for those of us who have experienced
its life changing and life saving power, we know both its Author and its words are real and true.
It is very easy to get so busy that we neglect spending
time in God's word like we should. Yet you will never regret taking
time to read the Bible. The word of God will make you wiser, more loving
and kind, more patient, and a better person. It is after all God's word
and when we plant that holy seed into our hearts and minds it will bear fruit.
Find time for God. Spend time in prayer. And do
not neglect the reading of His word. The Bible is a precious gift,
there is nothing else quite like it on earth. In its pages we read about
heroes of old, we learn lessons from both those who obeyed God, and
those who did not obey Him. We are lifted in our hearts by the Psalms,
and made wise by the Proverbs. And we have the greatest story ever told,
the life of Jesus, both His actions and His teachings.
If
you are feeling ill I would encourage you to read the Psalms for
comfort. If you are feeling joyful read the book of Philippians. If you
want to learn more about Jesus read the Gospels. If you want to know about the world you live in read Genesis. You will find all these
things and more in the greatest book in this world: The Holy Bible.
Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive us for not spending more time reading Your precious
word. It a wonderful gift and blessing to mankind. Thank You for so
many great teachings and the message of Salvation found in the Bible.
Amen.
