Whether Young Or Old Jesus Is With Us

Even to your old age, I am He,
And even to gray hairs I will carry you!
I have made, and I will bear;
Even I will carry, and will deliver you. Isaiah 46:4 (NKJV)

I started reading devotions when I was twenty years old. Someone gave me a copy of “Our Daily Bread” from Radio Bible Class. I still read those wonderful devotions, but instead of carrying a battered print copy around in my pocket I can now read it daily on my computer or phone. Later I came across “Guideposts” devotions founded by Norman Vincent Peale. I have long enjoyed reading devotions and that is probably why I enjoy writing them today.

We can get into good or bad habits when we are young that follow us into old age. One thing I am particularly and eternally glad for is that I met Jesus at a young age and He has been in my life for many years.

You might think that after being a Christian for so long and knowing Jesus all these years Christian life would be easy by now and we would have it all figured out as super-strong believers. And yet while we do have experience and hopefully years of knowledge from living the Christian life to draw upon, we are still very much in need of our Lord to help and carry us through.

The Apostle Paul spoke of having a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor. 12:7) that kept him from being proud and depending upon his own strength. Likewise, we get older and discover our own “thorns in the flesh” whether illness, disease, or just the gradually wearing away and deterioration of our health due to old age. So how comforting it is to know that God has not forgotten us in our old age but rather is there to carry us when we can no longer carry ourselves.

Whether you are young or old, you need Jesus. You need a relationship with the Creator who made you. Call upon Him to aid you, to guide you, to be your Lord and He will be faithful to see you through good times and bad, through youth and old age.

Prayer: Dear Lord, how much we need You every day. You have been with us in our youth and now in our old age. Carry us through to Your kingdom. Amen.
