“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Colossians 3:16 (NIV)
I have tried to make it a practice to show gratitude toward those who have helped me in any way. People appreciate it when we are thankful and show gratitude. They may tell you that “no thanks” is needed, but I suspect that deep down everyone appreciates hearing a “thank you” when they have helped us in some way.
Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can also benefit us. Aside from the obvious benefit of making us a grateful person, I have noticed over time that when I regularly let people know I appreciate them, that they go out of their way to do even more for me. I know that sounds “mercenary” but the fact is people want to help us even more when we let them know their help is greatly appreciated.
Consider those around you, consider the many ways you are helped by others, and then begin thanking them, letting them know they are appreciated, and that no small act of kindness is overlooked by you.
Let “thank you” become two of the most used words in your vocabulary. People want to be appreciated, and you can never go wrong by letting them know that they are.
Prayer: Lord, no one does more for us than You. You help us at every step in life’s journey. We thank You for helping us, and for the many people You send to aid us throughout our life. Amen.
