“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Col.3:17)
Recently we got a lot of snow. Thankfully we have a Good Samaritan neighbor who helped us out with the snowplow on front of his pickup truck. The second time he dug us out his wife and daughter were in the truck with him, and after he dug us out he drove slowly through the neighborhood looking for others to help.
What we do or don’t do can have a big impact on others. Our deeds are seen by neighbors, friends, and family, and they can inspire others to help, to show kindness and generosity. Those with disabilities may feel there is little that they can do to help others. Yet I believe even the smallest acts of kindness can encourage others. An encouraging word, a compliment, an act of thoughtfulness, such can be a balm of healing not only for others, but for us as well. When we take our focus off of ourselves and concern ourselves with others, a feeling of compassion rises in us to touch others and we are rewarded within by this feeling of kindness for others.
We may not have a pickup truck with a snowplow to help neighbors buried in snow, but we do have the ability to show the same concern and compassion for others as that helpful neighbor. Look for ways to bless others and God will bless you. It is impossible to be good to others without receiving a blessing in return.
It is not for selfishness that we should help others, but for the sheer pleasure of helping another in need. Yet, show kindness toward another, and see if you can avoid being blessed in return.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to find ways to bless others, to lift others up even as You carry us along. Amen.
