He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
Years ago I had witnessed about Jesus to a young woman. I invited her to church, and the time came for the altar call. With my head bowed I began praying for the woman to be saved. As I began to pray the Lord told me to essentially: Shut up and be still.
I had done my part, it was time for Jesus to do His part. The woman went forward and became a believer in Christ.
There are many times in life when we have “done our part” and we need to be quiet and be still, to allow the Lord to do His part. When we confront life’s challenges we can only do so much, and the rest is up to the Lord to take care of.
Sometimes we think our frantic activity, our worry over events and difficulties, our “spreading the word” about our troubles will somehow get the problems solved. While there are times to “spread the word”, there are also times to be quiet and be still. To stop the frantic activity, the racing thoughts, to stop fear in its tracks, and allow our faith to do its work.
I had witnessed to the young woman. The seed was planted. I took her to the altar of Christ. My work was done. All that remained was to be still, be quiet, and let the Lord work His wonder in her life.
Many situations in our life require us to simply believe, to trust that the Lord will do what is required, to make a way forward that requires no more effort on our part. Once we have set things in motion, we must depend upon the Lord through faith that we will receive the desired result. Our efforts can only take us so far. The rest is up to the Lord.
Dear Lord, thank You for saving souls and solving problems, for redeeming us and helping us through all of our troubles. Amen.
