Becoming A Mountain Climber

“For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.” (Psalm 22:24 NIV)

We are mountain climbers of a different sort. Our mountains are just as real as the Appalachians or any other mountains on earth. Today our mountain might be getting out of bed and taking a shower, getting breakfast ready or doing a load of clothes. It may be an otherwise simple chore or a task that takes all the energy we have and more besides.

We cannot measure ourselves against healthy people when it comes to accomplishments, except in “Mountain Climbing” for we have climbed mountains they cannot even begin to fathom.

There are times when our afflictions make us feel “small” and disdained. When we compare ourselves to healthy people and consider their accomplishments we may feel very small indeed. But what if we consider instead how these otherwise healthy people would react, what they would accomplish if the roles were reversed? They might be amazed at just how much we accomplish considering the afflictions we must face every day.

I think when we are feeling bad because our afflictions have weighed us down and have kept our accomplishments low, we need a new perspective. To some people we may not have accomplished much in any given day, perhaps no more than a few accomplishments in an entire week.

We need to remember that God is measuring our faithfulness by what we have, by what we are able to do, and not by how many miles we can run or the number of hours we put in at some task. We climb our mountains one step at a time, and it may take us awhile to get to the top, but we will get there with God’s help.

Prayer: Dear Lord, today there are mountains to climb, help us get to the top. Amen.
