In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: (Luke 6:12-13 ESV)
Jesus is our example in so many ways. One important example He gives us is regarding prayer. Jesus was often taking time away from the crowds and even His disciples to pray, to talk to the Father.
It is a wonderful habit to go to prayer before making big decisions, and even smaller decisions in life. In the verse above Jesus was going to choose His Apostles, those whose important duty would be to carry the gospel to the world, and He wanted to talk to the Father before making such a big decision. And so we too must talk to our heavenly Father before making big decisions.
My biggest mistakes in life have often been quick decisions and poor choices guided by fear, urgency, or thoughtlessness. Prayer could have saved me from making bad mistakes and taking wrong turns in life. Being guided by God’s word, sitting still before God and listening as well as asking, and allowing the Lord time to direct our steps and put things in motion for a good conclusion can save us much grief and regret.
Cover your life in prayer, let prayer lead the way before making important choices. Give God time to work out situations and challenges that come your way in life.
Dear Lord, You are our example and our Helper, and we need Your help today, show us the right path and help us to follow the course You have laid out for us. Amen.
